Al Jaffee was born in Savannah in 1921. He grew up at 119 West Gaston Street for the first years of his life. Then his mother took him to Lithuania — to the small town of Zarasai — and left her children there. His father remained in Savannah.
In 1933 — with Hitler rising to power in neighboring Germany — his father came to Lithuania and retrieved his children. Al Jaffee returned to the United States.
He joined Mad Magazine in its early years and invented the Fold-In — the back cover feature that readers folded to reveal a hidden image and message. He drew the Fold-In for 65 years. He held the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a comics artist. He died in 2023 at 102.
The Jewish community of Zarasai was executed by the Nazis and their collaborators during World War II. Al Jaffee's childhood home at 119 West Gaston Street has no marker.
