The official plat reads: Springfield Heights — being subdivision of lots 1 and 2 of 43 and 44 Springfield Plantation in the City of Savannah, Georgia. Subdivided and laid off for Mr. V.G. Schreck. Document K22.

Springfield Plantation was one of Savannah's colonial-era plantations. Enslaved people worked that land for generations. The plat document confirms exactly which plantation lots became which residential blocks.

In 1948 the neighborhood was developed into Carver Village — named after George Washington Carver, the scientist born into slavery who devoted his life to liberating poor Southern farmers from cotton dependency. With 600 homes it was once known as the largest individually-owned housing development for people of color in the world.

In 1940 seventy-two percent of African American households in Savannah lacked plumbing. Carver Village was built specifically to give Black World War II veterans — men who had fought for a country that still segregated them — the chance to own a home. The National Register of Historic Places listed Carver Village in 2019. DEED found the plantation underneath it.

The man who fought cotton's legacy had a neighborhood named for him — built on cotton plantation land. The subdivision plat confirms what was there before.
